In 3rd century Tomis was inhabited by a small community of Jews. Jewish population increased in the 19th century. In Constanta, Jews had a more favorable situation than the other Jews of Romania. World War 2 brought mass arrests. Men and women were sent to forced labor. After 1941, Jews came back to a special district in Constanta. Today, approx 100 Jews live in Constanta, while 4000 in the whole country.
We would like to take you on a tour around sites of Jewish Heritage in Constanta. Our professional guide will show you all sites refering to Jewish history. You will walk through the Ovid Square – the historical center of the city and you will see the Great Synagogue that was once a beautiful temple but today it needs a renovation. You will see very interesting building of Alleon Family House which was erected for one of the local prosperous Jewish families. Then, we will lead you towards the Marmorosch Blank & Co. Bank – a building which is a testimony to the importance of the local Jewish entrepreneurs. You will also have a chance to look at historical photographs of the Sephardic Temple, which was destroyed during Communist period.
